As many of you out there, we exhibited at the National IFT show in Chicago last month. It is certainly not the first time the show has been in Chicago, but I would guess that due to the filming of a major movie franchise, it certainly was one of the more interesting shows. As many taxi's were re-routed around closed avenue's I was fortunate enough to catch a glimpse (as did the thousands of others) of some of the movie's carnage: flaming cars, crashed up cars, ruined cars, and yes, flaming crash up cars dangling from some of Chicago's bridges. While discussing the event with one of my fellow cab passengers, I was reminded of one of the coolest 'almost happened' stories I have in relation to gums and film. About a year and a half ago I was fortunate enough to take a technical call from a New York City production house looking for advice. They were shooting a commercial and wanted to gel an entire swimming pool. Somehow this gentleman knew that gums could be used to accomplish this and called for more information. I was star struck. I hoped that one day our typically 'boring' world of gums would again intersect with big city lights. Here was my opportunity for fame and fortune (or at least a really cool story). Unfortunately for me, the commercial ended up taking a different direction as the director was concerned he may inadvertently drown some of the actors they were trying to encase. Oh well. At least I can keep watching Will Ferrell's best of SNL volume 2 dvd and see our drum take a starring role.
